Description
Fenton Antique Dragon & Lotus Cobalt/Blue Carnival Glass 9" Ruffled Bowl c1911-1920This pattern is probably one of the most popular among collectors
and comes in one of the widest ranges of colors in the carnival pantheon.
Dragon & Lotus Pattern #1656 Circa 1911-1920.
Pattern name attributed to Hartung, Preznick and Hand.
Source- Fenton Glass the first Twenty-five Years, Heacock 1978
Electric mirror like iridescence in the center with
deep rose and gold iridescence on each of the alternating dragon & lotus patterns.
The edges have a slivery
smoky
hue at the ruffled edge
with the base color blue that shines through in the light.
The exterior/back has 3 plain panels with a cobalt/ blue collar base.
The exterior has hues of gold and pink with hints of purple near the ruffled edge.
In the center of the bowl the peacock feathers are very well defined and would
indicate an early pressing of the mold.
There is what would appear to be a light straw mark in the center-
at least that’s what I thought at first– but I have two of these bowls-
Identical in every way with the exception of how they were iridized.
Each of the “twin” bowls have the exact same mark in the exact same \
place thus they came from the exact same mold at nearly the same time and is not a straw mark.

Excellent Antique Condition overall. No chips, cracks, or repairs.
This bowl has a couple of tiny fleabites on exterior/back
and a few small
closed bubbles on interior/exterior from manufacturing. Small straw mark on collar base.
Collectors of carnival glass are familiar with what I like to call “Character Marks”
that represent the many manufacturing imperfections that are present in almost every
piece of carnival glass ever made.
Each piece of carnival glass is indeed a snowflake- no two are exactly alike.
Sometimes it is the subtle imperfections that give a certain piece “character” that draws you in.
